On Christmas morning people start arriving at the Church

Inside the Church the Nativity scene had been placed in front of the Altar and The Saint Vincent de Paul ladies had decorated all the windows with flowers.

At the start of the Christmas day Mass the fifth and final Advent Candle was lit, one being lit on each of the four preceeding Sundays of Advent.

Mass in the Syro-Malabar Rite


Parishioners entering the Church this weekend were greeted by the decorations which had been placed there for the Kerala Community Mass on the Sunday afternoon which was followed by supper in Romanby village hall.

Blessing of the Easter Food Baskets in Thirsk


This is an East European tradition where the food to be eaten on Easter Sunday was blest the day before. Now it is sybolical food and each type of food has it's own meaning.

Palm Sunday


The Palms given out on Palm Sunday remind us of the palm leaves that were laid at the feet of Jesus as he entered Jerusalem. They are formed into a cross to remind us that just a few days later he would be crucified.

Fr Brennan was returned to St Hilda's Church in Whitby for his funeral where not so long ago he was celebrating sixty years of service to the Catholic Church

Fr Brennan starts his final journey from Whitby back to his hometown of Enfield in Co Meath, Ireland where he will be buried in Jordanstown Cemetery

As it was Mother's Day, children gave flowers to all the ladies as they left the Mass

Ash Wednesday


On this day all the people approach the altar at the beginning of Mass, and there the priest, dipping his thumb into ashes previously blessed, marks each forehead with the sign of the cross, saying the words: "Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return." The ashes used in this ceremony are made by burning the remains of the palms blessed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year.

Education Sunday


In addition to this being Education Sunday, we also had on display the relics of Blessed Nicholas Postgate, a local priest who was executed in York in 1679 by being Hung, Drawn and Quartered. Also at the end of the Mass there was a presentation of books to the nine children who are preparing for their First Holy Communion

The Relics of Blessed Nicholas Postgate including some hair, bone and a cape that he wore, were displayed in a glass fronted case at the front of the Church

Three Wise Men visiting Jesus

On this Sunday we celebrate the arrival of the three Wise Men or Kings to visit Jesus and bring him gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh
