Ash mark on a forehead

Wednesday 22nd February 2012
Ash Wednesday

We were told if anyone asks you what the mark on your forehead is for, simply say "I am a Christian and it is Ash Wednesday"
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection, and fasting which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday.
The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year. The ashes are christened with Holy Water and are scented by exposure to incense. While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful.

Sunday 19th February 2012

Following an invitation to watch a video entitled The Big Silence, which will be shown after Stations of the Cross at 6 p.m. on Friday, Father James introduced Hilary Alflatt, who told us about his work leading retreats which emphasise the value of silence, particularly in prayer.

Episode 1 of The Big Silence to be shown on 24th February , first broadcast by the BBC: 22 Oct 2010, shows how Abbot Christopher Jamison tries to teach five people the value of silent meditation.

Episode 2 to be shown on 9th March will be following the volunteers as they undertake eight days in complete silence.

Episode 3 to be shown on 16th March will ask how much have the lives of the five people been changed in their time in silence.
